A spot of number crunching / 何人？

I’ve been dancing salsa for about 6 1/2 years now.

This morning I suddenly wondered: how many people have I danced with up to now?

So I started counting.

First, I have 89 maimikus on Mixi, equivalents of Facebook ‘friends’ on the popular Japanese social networking site, Mixi. 81 of them are my salsa friends/aquaintances, and I’ve danced with pretty much all of them, men and women, thanks to my attempt at learning to lead in the last half a year.

Next, Facebook friends. 215 of them. 203 of these are salsa pals, and when I take duplications with Mixi out, I’m left with 187. This number includes a few online friends I haven’t had a chance to dance with yet, plus some musicians and quite a few women I haven’t danced with. I reckon I’ve probably danced with about 100 altogether here.

So far, I’ve got about 180 out of Mixi and Facebook then.

But when I think about my present and former regular haunts in Tokyo, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester, there are/were far more people I’ve danced with regularly but without being connected through these social networking sites than my Mixi/Facebook salsa pals. Be conservative and say the ratio is about half-and-half, and the number still doubles to 360 regular salsa partners.

Now turn to people I’ve danced on a one-off basis away from those regular haunts.

In the last 6 1/2 years I attended a total of 22 salsa weekend events (congresses, festivals, weekenders, salsa holidays), as I mentioned in 25 random facts about me. At some of these events I only danced two nights while some were 4-nighters. The average is 3 nights per event, and even when I was taking regular breaks, I must have danced at least 40 songs per night at these late night events. Which means 3×40x22=2640 songs altogether. At these events I usually avoid dancing with people I dance with regularly (i.e., the 360 people above), opting instead to ask random people I’ve never seen before. I also usually avoid dancing with the same person more than once per night. Of course there are people I danced with every night, so I’m sure the number doesn’t go up to as many as 2640 people – one for each song danced – but I think it’s fair to think that I must have at least danced with 900 people over these 22 weekends.

So the conclusion is, with the regulars and congress goers, it seems certain that I have at least danced with 1200 people already.

Salsa’s quite amazing, if you think about it…

サルサを始めて6年半くらいになる。

今まで通算でどのくらいの人数と踊ったんだろう、とふと思った。

早速計算を始める。

まずMixiのマイミク数が現在89人。うち81人がサルサを通じた知り合いで、ここ半年リードの練習をしているので、男女を問わずほぼ全員と踊っている。

次にFacebookのフレンド数、現在215人。そのうちサルサを通じた知り合いは203人で、上記マイミクとかぶっている数を除くと187人。こちらの方はオンラインの知り合いでまだ直接会ったことのない人やミュージシャンも含むし、女性の中にはまだ踊ったことがない相手もけっこういるので、実際に踊った相手は187人中たぶん100人くらいではないかと思う。

というわけで、マイミクとフレンド合わせてざっと180人くらい。

だが、東京でもエディンバラ・グラスゴーでもマンチェスターでも、マイミクやフレンドになっている人と、SNSではつながってないが会えばいつも踊っている(いた)という人の数を比較すると、どう考えてもSNSでつながっていない人の方が多い。まあ少なめに見積もって半々と考えても倍増することになるわけで、「レギュラーに踊った相手」だけでもう確実に360人くらいにはなってしまう計算だ。

さらに、レギュラーではなく踊ったことのある相手についても考えてみる。

私はこれまでの6年半で合計22回サルサの大型週末イベント（コングレス、フェスティバル、ウィークエンダー、サルサホリデー等）に参加している、という話は以前書いた（25 random facts about me）。イベントによっては2晩だけ参加したというものもあり、逆に4夜連続というイベントもあるが、まあ平均すると各イベント3夜。休み休み踊っていても一晩におそらく少なくとも40曲くらいは踊っているはずだ。ということは、3×40x22=2640曲くらい? コングレスに行ったときは、いつもレギュラーに踊っている相手（前述の360人）とはあまり踊らず、知らない人をひたすら誘いまくるように心がけている。また、一晩に同じ人と何度も踊ることは避けている。まあイベント3夜で毎晩踊った相手もいるから2640曲すべてが違う相手ということはないわけだが、少なめに見積もっても900人くらいは踊っているはずだと思う。

というわけで、レギュラーに踊っている相手とイベントでだけ踊った相手を合わせると、すでに間違いなく1200人は超えているはず、という勘定になる。

そう考えるとちょっとすごいよね、サルサって。

Not my day? / ちょっとへこんだ日

Today in a nutshell:

- Found in the junk mail box an enquiry regarding a large job (i.e. potentially good money). Replied but was told too late.

- Went to a phone shop to buy a new mobile. Had to wait for a 1/4 hour then spent an hour to sort out options, the contract, paperwork, etc., which meant no time left for the gym.

- Realised afterwards that hubby had a discount voucher I could have used.

- Got the first call to my new mobile – which told me that the course I’d signed up for had been cancelled.

今日はこんな日だった。

・迷惑メールフォルダーに大きな仕事（=大きな報酬）の問い合わせが紛れ込んでいるのを発見。返事を出したが「返事がなかったからもう他の人に発注した」と言われた。

・携帯ショップに新しい携帯を買いに行った。順番待ちに15分、契約内容の確認や書類の取りまとめで1時間。おかげでジムに行く時間がなくなった。

・購入手続きが全て終わった後で、実はダンナが新規購入用の割引クーポンを持っていたことが発覚。

・買ったばかりの携帯に電話がかかってきた（前の携帯の番号引き継いだので）。「申し込んであった講習コースが規定人数に届かずキャンセルされた」という連絡だった。
