Microsoft – what happened next / マイクロソフト後日談

I wrote a post titled Microsoft does it again / またマイクロソフトは・・・ the other day (checking back I realise that it was at the beginning of May – time really seems to fly these days). It’s been a month and a half since I started using Office 2007, and I still can’t get used to the ribbon. Yes I’ve read reviews that claim that the design has its own logic and that it’s actually good and user-friendly once you get used to it, but to me it’s just too frustrating not to be able to find the functions I know are there hidden somewhere.

One thing I’ve learned in these few weeks is that you can still use Office 2003 keyboard shortcuts on Office 2007, so often I just use these instead of the ribbon. And that’s fine with shortcuts I’ve used often enough, but there are many functions I don’t remember/know the shortcuts for. Often times I remember how to get into a menu (e.g., Alt+F for File, Alt+O for Format) but don’t know the shortcut for choosing the function I want from the drop-down menu. That wasn’t a problem on Office 2003 since I could just look at the drop-down menu and pick, but Office 2007 doesn’t give you the drop-down menu, so there’s no help. At a pinch, I’ve even resort to opening my old dying laptop, which contains Office 2003, just to check what the shortcuts were. Which is just ridiculous.

I wondered if Microsoft had hidden a “classic menu” function somewhere deep inside Office 2007 without telling us poor users, and decided to google. None of the hits I got alluded to such act of generosity from Microsoft, but instead the search turned up dozens of hits about add-ons for displaying the Office-2003-style menu on Office 2007. It seems I’m not the only one who can’t get their work done without the old-style menu – so much so that there’s now a thriving market for programs that help us lost souls. Encouraged, I extended my search to find “classic menu” add-ons that are available for free. After all, it’s insult to injury to have to pay more money than I’ve already shelled out because of Microsoft’s stupidity. And I’m skint (I’ll explain later). Eventually I found what I was looking for (http://takami.coresv.net/office2007/ (NB: it’s in Japanese)) and downloaded it, but while I was searching, I found this page:

So it appears that Microsoft know that we are having problems. But instead of giving us back what we want, they give us something like this so that we can all learn to use the new toy they’ve kindly given us. Isn’t that just so typically Microsoft…

* One of the reasons I’m skint is also related to Microsoft; I’ve decided to buy a Windows XP laptop at the end of May before XP was withdrawn from the market. This time I’ve learned my lesson and bought it without Office preinstalled. My plan is to install OpenOffice – I’ve been reluctant to try it until now because of potential compatibility issues with MS Office, but it’s occurred to me that I probably shouldn’t worry when you have incompatibility issues between Office versions, with Office 2003 unable to read the default Office 2007 file formats.

「Microsoft does it again / またマイクロソフトは・・・」というポストをしばらく前（・・・と書いて日付を調べたら5月の初めだった。何だか時間が経つのが早い今日この頃だ）に書いた。その後Office 2007を1ヶ月半使ってきたわけだが、やっぱりリボンは使いにくい。「デザインにはそれなりの理屈があって、慣れればけっこう使える」というレビューも散見するが、私としては、あるとわかっている機能がどこに隠れているのかわからない、ということが多すぎていらいらする。

しばらく使っているうちに、Office 2003のキーボードショートカットがOffice 2007でも使えることがわかったので、リボンを使わずにこちらでやってしまうことも多くなった。が、以前からよく使っていたショートカットなら覚えているが、使っていなかったものも多い。特に、メニューに入るショートカット（Alt+Fが「ファイル」とか、Alt+Oが「書式」とか）は覚えていても、ドロップダウンしたメニューの選択肢のショートカットがわからないことが多い。それは、ショートカットでメニューに入り、出てきたドロップダウンリストを見て選ぶ、という作業スタイルだったからだ。苦肉の策として、Office 2003が入っている瀕死の旧パソで2003版を開き、そのメニューでショートカットを確認するなんてことまでやっている。とてつもなく不便だ。

もしかしたらマイクロソフトが宣伝しないだけで、どこかに従来のメニューを表示できる機能があるんじゃないかと、Google検索してみた。すると、そういう機能があるという情報は出てこなかったが、代わりに「Office 2007に旧版メニューを表示させるためのadd-on」というのがぞろぞろ出てきた。つまり、旧版メニューじゃないと仕事ができない人は私のほかにもたくさんいて、そういう人のための救済策というのがちょっとしたマーケットになっているわけだ。マイクロソフトの愚行のために余計なお金を使うのは悔しいし、ここんところ金欠状態（理由は後述）なので、無料ツールはないかとさらに探したらフリーウェア（http://takami.coresv.net/office2007/）が見つかったので、早速ダウンロードしたのだが、その検索のときにこんなものを見つけた。

なんだ、マイクロソフトだってわかってるんじゃん、みんな困ってるってこと。それでも「クラシックメニュー機能搭載」という方向に向かわず、代わりに「こういうの作ってあげたからこれ見て勉強しなさい」とくるあたりがマイクロソフトなんだけどね。

* ところで金欠の理由のひとつは、これまたマイクロソフトなのだ。いよいよWindows XPの販売が終わってしまうということで、5月の終わりにXP搭載ノートパソコンの駆け込み買いをしたのである。こちらはデスクトップの時の経験でこりたので、Officeが入っていないバージョンで買った。こちらにはOpenOfficeを入れてみようと思っている。MS Officeとの互換性が不安で今まで手を出していなかったのだが、Office 2007で作ったファイルをOffice 2003で開けないという現状を考えれば気にするほどのこともないと思い当たったので。
