Visitors from the US…

We will be welcoming some big-name visitors from the US in Tokyo in the next couple of weekends.

First off, Shaka Brown and the iMambo gang will arrive this weekend – parties will be held at Zero Hour Studio, Roppongi, on Friday and Saturday (24th & 25th April) and at Warehouse, Azabu Juban, on Sunday 26th April. There will be a number of workshops on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. 1-day and 2-day passes for the workshops and parties are available from Jonathan & Hana of Extreme Salsa (I’ve got mine :-) ).

On the following weekend, it will be the turn of John & Liz from Salsamania. They will be taking part in Salsa Hotline Japan’s Golden Week Lessons on 3rd-5th May along with some of the top salsa teachers from Japan. The monthly Salsa Libre party at No Name has been rescheduled to coincide with the GWL and will be held on Saturday 3rd.

Monday night at Salsa Caribe

The original plan was to go along around 9pm, but a spot of impulsive website updating took a bit longer than I originally thought, and it must have been around 10:30 when I got there.

Monday’s the quietest night at Caribe, but I actually like it. It’s nice to have all that room to dance in. I seem to take up rather a lot of room when dancing (bad habit, I know), and a busy floor makes me tense up as I brace myself for flying elbows, stubbing heels and slot-invading bodies, and I follow badly as a result. And because it’s a quiet night frequented by more or less the same set of people every week (mostly made up of students of Nao & Masa, the resident teachers for the Monday lessons), it has a relaxed feel of a group outing. Nao & Masa are good teachers, and their male students generally lead well. Oh, and don’t forget the biggest attraction – you get to dance with Masa on Mondays. Tokyo has many good and great salseros, but if you are looking for leaders who make the follower *feel* good, I think Masa’s one of the best. He’s a dream to follow, with a nice, smooth lead all leaders should aspire to.

最初は９時ごろ行くつもりだったのが突然ウェブサイトの更新を始めたくなり、それが思ったより時間を食って、カリベに着いた時にはたぶんもう１０時半くらいを回っていた。

月曜日はカリベにいちばん人が入らない日なのだが、私はけっこう好きだったりする。混んでない方が踊るにはいい。どうも私は踊る時にやたらとスペースをとってしまうようで（うーん、どうにかしないと）、混んだところで踊ると、周囲からひじやヒールが突っ込んできたりスロットに突然周囲の人が押し込んできてぶつかったりする恐怖で緊張してしまい、フォローがどヘタになってしまうので、スペースがあると踊りやすい。それと、月曜日は大体いつも同じような顔ぶれの常連さんばかり（月曜日はナオ＆マサレッスンなので、主にナオ＆マサの生徒たち）、クラブというよりはこじんまりとした身内の集まりという感じでなんか居心地が良い。ナオ＆マサグループの男性は全体にリードが上手。先生の教え方がしっかりしてるのだ、と思う。そして何といっても！月曜日にはマサさんと踊れるのがいい。東京には上手いサルセーロ、かっこいいサルセーロはたくさんいるが、「気持ちの良いリード」という点ではマサはトップレベルじゃないだろうか。スムーズでフォローしやすいあのリードは、他の男性諸氏にもぜひ見習ってほしい。

私の知らなかった日本・・・はじめに

私のことを知らない人がここを読む可能性もあると思うので、突然ですがここで自己紹介します。

生まれは水戸、育ちは川崎、大学は東京の某マンモス大学に行き、そこまでは普通に日本人でした。
大学3年を終えた段階で1年休学し、スコットランドに留学しました。留学先はスターリング大学ですが、学部編入とか交換学生ではなく、大学付属の英語教育センターCELTでの語学留学です。スコットランド史について卒論を書いていたのでそのための文献収集も兼ねていました。この1年でスコットランドが気に入り、まあ縁もあって、日本に戻って大学を卒業したあと、スコットランドに舞い戻りました。以来去年までずっとスコットランドに住んでいました。「以来」というのがどのくらいの時間かというと、まだ人生の半分がスコットランドというところまではきていませんが、かなり近づいています。3歳以前の記憶は全然ないので、その分を差し引いて計算した場合はちょうど今半々くらいになるでしょうか（年がばれるなあ）。国籍は英国籍に帰化していますので、法的にはもう日本人ではありません。

スコットランドでは結婚し、離婚し、再婚したのですが、2度目の結婚の新婚旅行で日本を旅して回ったら、夫がすっかり日本を気に入ってしまい、日本に2～3年住んで働きたいと言い出しました。就職先もしっかり本人が探してきて確保し、しゃーねーかと私もしぶしぶくっついて日本に戻ってきたのが2008年の正月。スコットランドにいた間も一応数年に一度は里帰りしていたし、日本語メディアに接する機会もないわけではなかったんですが、日本の住民になるのはすごく久しぶりです。私の中のイメージの日本はバブル華やかな1980年代で止まってたので、ずいぶん変わったなーとびっくりすることも多いです。

というわけで、「日本、変わったねー」という印象記をここにぽつぽつ書こうと思います。
「ふだん着のスコットランド」の日本版みたいなもんです。
